Chittagong port hit by strike

Transfer of cargo from mother ships in outer anchorage areas and at 16 terminals on the Karnaphuli river in Chittagong were disrupted after workers of lighterage vessels have gone on strike.
Lighterage vessels unload goods from mother ships anchored in deep sea and bring them to the port's cargo facility.
The strike was effective nationwide from Friday. Chittagong, Bangladesh's main port, was worst hit. The workers on strike want better salary and security.
Most Lighterage vessels were lying idle across the country.
Secretary of Chittagong Port Authority Syed Farhad Uddin Ahmed told bdnews24.com that unloading from twenty mother vessels at outer anchorage had to be stopped for the last three days.
Water Transport Coordination Cell Executive Director Mahbub Rashid told bdnews24.com that 450 lighterage vessels were idle in Chittagong alone.
"320 ships were waiting to unload 320,000 tonnes of goods elsewhere."
A meeting was slated for Monday at the Ministry of Shipping to discuss the issue, an official said.
Water-transport Workers' Federation Central Joint Secretary and Lighterage Workers Union Office Secretary Khorshed Alam told bdnews24.com that owners of lighterage vessels have announced wage hikes but not implemented them.
"That is why workers are upset and have gone on strike," he said.
