Shipping and Logistics Industry in the country to get a boost with the launch of specialized steel plates

Essar Steel is the first Indian Steel company to launch specialized steel products which can withstand -40 degree Celsius, below sea level

Mumbai, May 10, 2013: Essar Steel today announced the launch of high end branded steel plate products for the Shipping and Logistics industry. These products, aimed at import-substitution, are manufactured at the company's state-of-the-art plate mill located at Hazira, Gujarat.
The Indian shipbuilding industry has witnessed a tenfold growth over the last decade. India has ten large and about 30 medium and small ship building yards in the country. These yards not only build ships but also undertake ship repair activities.
Looking at the opportunity and the growing need in the shipbuilding sector, Essar Steel has introduced "Essar Shipor" a range of hi-tech steel plate products that have been designed to support this surge in demand in the sector.

Commenting on the launch of these plate products, Alok Gupta, President, Sales & Marketing, Essar Steel said, "The competencies that we have built in ship building plate productsis not only aimed at replacing imports to meet theburgeoning domestic demand, but has a lot of export potential as well. We plan to work closely with the ship building industry to develop any specific grade of steel that it may require since the plate mill is versatile and has the capability to produce any grade of plates."
Essar Steel plates are 2.5 times stronger and 1.5 times wider than any other Indian manufacturers and comparable to the best in the world
Until now, India was largely import-dependent to meet this growing demand. With Essar Steel's plate mill, this demand can be indigenously met. Ship building plates requires certifications from various international agencies like ABS, Lloyd's Register, GL, NKK, RINA, DNV etc. Essar Steel's plate products conform to all these certification norms.
Essar adopts the most advanced metallurgical processes and that make these products unique. Employing the best steelmaking technology, the products are customized with various treatments to control the properties in the steel like sulphur levels and phosphorous & gaseous content. Calcium treatment and inclusion shape control reduces internal discontinuities, giving plates improved toughness, enhanced fatigue life, better weldability and excellent shape properties.
These products are customized and developed with advanced Hydraulic Automatic Gage Control (HAGC), online Gamma Thickness Gauge and L-2 Automation. The company supplies steel plates as per the actual thickness, width, length and profiles required for specific projects or applications.
Essar Shipor is amongst the finest in the world with excellent strength, durability and shape properties. Essar Shipor comes in a thickness range of 8.0-85.0(mm) and a tensile strength of 400-490(mpa) with yield strength of 235-355(mpa). It has a wide application and can be used to build Merchant Ships, Cargo Ships, Bulk Carriers and Submarine Hulls.
